Mavis Thorpe Clark was born on 26 June, 1909 in Melbourne, and died there on 8 July, 1999. Clark was a prolific author of educational and children's books. Clark's first published work was a serial in the Australasian when she was 14. Her other publications include, Hatherly's first fifteen (1930), The twins from Timber Creek (1949), The brown land was green (1956), Gully of gold (1958), They came south (1963), Opal mining (1969), Iron mountain (1970), and, No mean destiny: the story of the War Widows' Guild of Australia 1945-85 (1986). In 1966 Clark won the Book of the Year Award of the Children's Book Council of Australia for The min min (1967). In later life, Clark also wrote for adults, and in 1965 she published her biography of Sir Douglas Nicholls under the title, Pastor Doug: the story of an Aboriginal leader.
