David Rowe, cartoonist, talks about his family background; his childhood in Canberra; primary schooling; early interest in drawing; St Edmund's College; art, football and television were his main interest, there was little discussion about politics at home, enrolled in Economics at University of Canberra but later transferred to Arts to study political science and art history; cartoon strips for university paper; cartooning influences included Pickering and Pryor; enrolled in graphic design course at the Canberra School of Art; vacation jobs in Public Service; freelance illustrations for Canberra Times; takes a full-time position as a graphic designer with Canberra Times and undertakes occasional editorial cartoons for Canberra Times when Pryor was on leave; talks about London and freelancing for the Independent, Formaula 1, Times Literary Supplement, Time Out; travelling in Europe; on return to Australian switched to part-time work with the Canberra Times and full-time work with the Financial Review providing their illustrations and caricatures and Chanticleer column. He then discusses choice of themes; censorship issue; development of cartooning style and work patterns.
