Summary

Two photographs from the luncheon held at Parliament House in Canberra on 4 September 1943, during which Mrs Roosevelt was presented with a photostat copy of the Cook journal as a present from the Australian Government to the people of the United States. Also a bound copy of speeches made at the luncheon by John Curtin, W. M. Hughes and Mrs Roosevelt, a press release and a letter of appreciation from President Roosevelt. Two letters (signed by Roosevelt and Curtin respectively) and one photograph concerning the second presentation ceremony of the Cook journal copy to the President in Washington, 1944.

Biography/History

During her unofficial visit to Australia in 1943, Eleanor Roosevelt (wife of American President Franklin Roosevelt) was presented with a copy of Captain Cook's autograph journal of his Endeavour voyage. In 1944 a related ceremony was held in Washington.
