Biography/History

The barque Serena was built in 1893 and carried cargo between Europe and Australia. Jabez Rowland first sailed on the ship under Captain Hugh Dagwell from Leith, Scotland to Melbourne via Fredrikshald (Halden) Norway, arriving on in Melbourne on 3 January 1907 with a cargo of lumber. The return voyage terminated at Barry, Wales on 8 June 1907. On Rowland's second voyage, the ship left Sharpness, England on 16 August 1907, arriving in Melbourne on 17 December 1907. The ship departed Melbourne on 31 January 1908 for Wallaroo, South Australia, where it was loaded with wheat, but on its voyage to Liverpool, England, where it arrived on 30 August 1908, the ship encountered mountainous seas. On 18 March 1907 six men were swept overboard. Two men were rescued, but four of the crew were lost (see The Argus, Wednesday 17 July 1907, page 8). This broadside describes Rowland's first voyage to Australia and is dedicated to the Seamen's Mission in Port Melbourne.
