Summary

The album contains letters, newsclippings and photos relating to the purchase and fitting of the bomber, the flight to Australia, and subsequent events including the use of the bomber after Captain Wikner sold it and details of the plans of Captain Wikner and some of his passengers when they arrived in Australia.

Biography/History

Captain Wikner is an ex-A.T.A. pilot who bought a Halifax bomber ("Waltzing Matilda") to fly him, his wife and two children to Australia in June, 1946. He took 20 passengers with him to share the costs. It was the first flight of a private aircraft between England and Australia after World War II and the first to carry flying migrants to Australia.
