Summary

Fifi L'Amour, cabaret entertainer, speaks about her early childhood; her parents both being socialists; participating in protests as a child; her involvement in theatre in her university days; the "Drag" scene in Sydney at that time and the current scene; working as a stripper and the circumstances which lead her to this form of dance; the "Cabaret conspiracy"; receiving funds from The Australia Fund for training in these skills; her involvement in "Sideshow"; appearing in the controversial production of "The beard' in 1980 and "The human voice"; her family's reaction to her activities; a cabaret act with David de Most which toured Australia; her involvement in Aboriginal causes; an incident at the Pine Gap Restaurant; returning to Sydney in 1985 then moving to Melbourne; the cabaret scene in Melbourne at that time; undertaking a national tour as a support act for "the Flying Pickets" and the invitation to go to Britain with them.

L'Amour talks about receiving a grant to write a show based on the life of Lola Montez; performing at the Edinburgh Festival; their success in Britain with "Goldrush cabaret"; moving to Berlin and Amsterdam in 1986; appearing on European television; working as an entertainer in non-English speaking countries; the importance she places on costume in her performances; venues they played in Holland and Germany; the popularity of Aboriginal culture in Europe; resuming her work on the Lola Montez project; meeting people who had lived through the horrors of the war; her feelings when several of her friends died of AIDS and the effect on her, living and working with people affected by the disease; becoming involved with the Gay movement and in projects for AIDS awareness; David de Most's death in 1998; meeting Rodolfo Ravissant and forming a new partnership; her efforts to re-assimilate back into Australian life and entertainment.
