Summary

"Tapes 1-11 were recorded in areas of southeastern Australia where, it was believed, no tradition remained.Tape 12 onwards were made by people still fluent in their traditions, although many of the finer extra-musical details noted by earlier workers appear to have been omitted" -Field notes ... , p. 2.

Biography/History

During 1962 and 1963, A.M. and C.J. Ellis, working with a grant from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies, made a number of tape recordings of songs of the Australian Aborigines.

This collection contains ceremonial and gender specific material. Related documentation should be consulted before use.

"Unless otherwise stated, both A.M. & C.J. Ellis were present at recording sessions. For special reasons (e.g. to record men's or women's secret songs) only one was present. All performances were given specifically for the purpose of recording" -Field notes ... , p. 2.
