Summary

MS 9097 comprises correspondence, reports, news releases and media articles relating to the Bougainville Freedom Movement, to contemporary events on the island and the wider implications of the situation on Bougainville for the government of Papua New Guinea. The collection includes a series of media releases and ground reports from the Bougainville Freedom Movement's newsletter Garamut (1995-1997); articles referring to the engagement of the private military company, Sandline International; a series of reports broadcast on Radio Australia; and articles by Jenny Dennis on political protests and activism (7 boxes).

The Acc05.141 instalment comprises copies of articles by Max Watts on Bougainville and Rio Tinto, and articles by Jenny Dennis on political protest and activism more generally, with some related documents and correspondence (1 folder).

The Acc08.048 instalment comprises copies of news articles by Max Watts (in German) (1 folder).

Biography/History

Writer and member of the Bougainville Freedom Movement. Max Watts has published US-Army - Europe: von der Desertion zum Widerstand in der Kaserne, oder, Wie die U-Bahn zur RITA fuhr (West-Berlin : Harald Kater, 1989), and, with David Cortright, Left face : soldier unions and resistance movements in modern armies (New York : Greenwood, 1991).
