Major-General Pearson describes his military education and career. As a senior person "in the middle" he describes the changes in military thinking, tactics and organisation that occurred 1940-1980 as Australia turned from Britain to the USA. Pearson discusses at length his work in Indonesia and elsewhere in Southeast Asia including Vietnam during the 1950s and 1960s. Pearson reflects on a number of current trends such as civilianisation and the move towards more combined operations.

Pearson recalls deciding on a military career while at Sydney's Newington College. After graduating from the Royal Military College (RMC), Duntaroon, ACT in 1940 he was posted to the Armoured Corps. Pearson spent the next 35 years in various positions in the Australian Army earning numerous distinguished awards. He served in New Guinea as a Lieutenant and awarded a Military Cross for gallantry under fire. Pearson earned a CBE as Services Attache at the Australian Embassy in Djakarta during the unrest in the mid 1960s . In 1968 he was appointed Commander of the Australian Task Force in Vietnam and won a Distinguished Service Order for his actions. From 1970 till 1972 he held the position of Commandant of RMC, Duntaroon. Pearson retired from the Army in 1975 and the following year was appointed to the position for 6 years of Chief Executive of the Royal Agricultural Society.
