Biography/History

In 1848 Robert Maddrell, married Elizabeth Coghill, daughter of Capt. Coghill. They lived in a cottage at Mona before inheriting 'Bedervale' from John Coghill. Their eldest son Robert John Coghill Madrell married Kate Knapp in 1873, and built the original wooden house 'Mona', where they had 14 children. In 1900, on Robert Maddrell's death, Robert J.C. Madrell and family moved to 'Bedervale', and his brother Henry Francis Maddrell with wife Louisa Jamieson moved to 'Mona' making the alterations to the house featured in the plans. 'Mona' was inherited by H.F. Maddrell's son Henry Onyx, and on his death, in 1932, it was sold.
