This collection depicts various topographical images from the South Australian Great Northern Exploring Expedition under the command of John MacDouall Stuart 1858-1862. John MacDouall Stuart was one of Australia's greatest inland explorers, who, among other things, was the sussessful rival of Robert O'Hara Burke by being the first to cross the continent from coast to coast in 1861. Stuart's explorations are acknowledged as being among the most important in the history of Australian discovery. They included reaching the centre of Australia on 23 April 1858 and proving that it was not a great inland sea.
