Dr Penny, medical researcher and immunologist, speaks about his background in medical research; the role he played in the early days of the HIV epidemic in Australia helping shape public policy at both the federal level and the N.S.W. state level; the struggle to push through a national strategy to fight the HIV epidemic; the success and failures of Australia's responses to the disease; problems at the federal and local government political levels; the perceived to be effects of the HIV epidemic from the early 1980s and actual outcomes. He gives his views on issues such as the needle exchange program; the role of interested groups in educating those people considered to be at risk; the level of health information in the public domain; the medical supply of heroin to serious addicts. Dr. Penny reviews the history of the epidemic and many of the strategies attempted; different challenges facing first and third world countries; natural therapies; HIV education and prevention; SARS epidemic; bio-terrorism.

Dr Ron Penny is a leading immunologist working with the N.S.W. Dept. of Health. He was originally interviewed by the National Library of Australia in 1993.
