- Summary:
-
Kaye Kessing, illustrator and writer, recalls her early years on a farm near Eudunda, north-east of Adelaide in South Australia; her arrival in Central Australia to work as an art and craft teacher (1971); the cultural shock of moving to Amata on Pitjantjatjara Aboriginal land to teach art and craft (1972); working with husband Bob Kessing painting murals, designing t-shirts and other graphic arts projects (1980s); the creation and touring of Battle for the Spinifex, a large exhibition of 11 canvasses dealing with the feral animal problems of Central Australia. She reads a section from the Easter Bilby book, and describes her latest writing project, Bilby's ring. Kessing speaks about the loss of bird and other native animals caused by recent dominance of buffle grass on her 100 acre property 10km south of Alice Springs.
- Biography/History:
-
Kaye Kessing is best known for her creation of Australia's Easter Bilby imagery. Two picture books, Easter Bilby (1994) and Easter Bilby's secret (1998) have been published for the Anti-rabbit Research Foundation of Australia. These picture books lead the campaign to replace the introduced rabbit with the native Bilby as the Easter icon of Australia.
