Mary-anne Rooney, a teacher and quilter from Spring Gully, near Bendigo,Victoria recalls her family background at Cahuna, Vic.; her tertiary education at the Bendigo Teachers College, Vic. and University of Melbourne; learning to quilt with the Strathdale (Vic.) Quilters; the philosophy of quilting; social aspects of quilting; training techniques; ratio of hand quilters to machine quilters, some doing both; the process of quilting; basic concepts of quilting in relation to history, etc.; patchwork quilting styles, noting the influence of America on Australian styles; charity quilt projects, such as Canberra bush fire victims, Bali victims; Sept. 11, Kosovo refugees; Kosovo quilt project; teaching quilting skills; varing attitudes of quilters in regard to traditional methods; philosophy of tradition function of quilting versus traditional methods.
