Valerie Evans, former secretary of the Public Lending Right Committee, 1973-1985, recalls her family background and early years; in 1973 (?) becoming a temporary stenographer for poet and author Nancy Keesing who was a member of the Literature Board (1973-1974) and its Chairperson (1974-1977); her work as secretary of the Public Lending Right Committee (1973-1985). She speaks about the first meeting (Committee of Inquiry under Literature Board Chairman Geoffrey Blainey) to plan the Public Lending Right (PLR) (2 May 1973); the Australian Council for the Arts under the Whitlam government and its views on PLR; the initial Australian Society of Authors commissioned library survey; composition of the initial PLR committee and office staff; prominent personalities involved with the PLR campaign; her responsibilities as PLR Committee secretary; efforts made to lobby the Whitlam government for PLR; how academic authors used to lobby for Educational Lending Right before her retirement in 1985; how the Australia Council was given responsibility for the PLR office again under the Frazer government; initial opposition from librarians to the PLR; government funding of the PLR Committee.
