Summary

An exceptionally rare play with Australian characters set in the South Seas. The action of this play involves the cargo of a schooner brought from San Francisco to Apia in Samoa. The new American Consul, Jemmy, who travelled on board the schooner, uses his sweeping powers to confiscate the cargo for the benefit of himself and his friends. The characters include Robert 'A native of Van Diemen's Land' and later appointed vice-consul, and Aull 'A Sydney duck - a regular grabber'.

Pasted on cover: The new consul - a play by "Sagapolatale", pronounced Sanga pola tarley, a literary gem with a rare imprint from the Port of Pago Pago American Samoa, 1857.

A very early Samoan printing not known to Ferguson.
