Robert McKenzie born 1953 in Stanmore, Sydney, N.S.W talks about his schooling; his previous work in various occupations; moving to Wisemans Ferry in 1976; his interest in Australian windmills and developing that interest further through photography; travelling in the outback and seeing windmills; how the windmill is an Australian icon; setting up the website; the others in Australia who share his interest; the "Windmill Journal" edited by Bruce Hewitson, Malcolm Walter and himself; the distribution and subscription to the journal; how the journal is Australian and New Zealand based; a story about throwing jar of oil at the head of the windmill by farmers who don't want to climb to the top; the history of the windmill in Australia and overseas.
McKenzie discusses agricultural shows; how Australian windmills peaked in the early 20th century; he then speaks about how 1950 was the best production year for Southern Cross and how production has tapered off due to electricity being more accessible; the manufacturers of the past; the remaining manufacturers, WD Moore (WA), Varco Mills (SA), Brien (Colac), Comet (Sydney), Southern Cross (Toowoomba); how in 2000, Southern Cross made their 200,000 mill. windmill; wind tunnel experiments in America; the cost of a windmill today; explanation of towers and placement of windmills, the pumping capacity, gearing of mills and turntables; the falling number of contractors; Occupational Health & Safety procedures; working with a harnass 20', 30', 40' up to about 60' towers; solar power; the windmill at the Stockmans Hall of Fame; his interest in photography; presently working with his wife Diane, photographing weddings.
