David Rogers talks about his interest in aviation; joining the RAAF; his Pilots' course at Point Cook; aircraft, their characters and design; his RAAF postings, including S.E. Asia and training; attending an Instructors' Course (1966) and returning to Pearce, WA; the training of 120 pilots per year for service in Vietnam and elsewhere; the F1-11 background and basis of his involvement, including a move to the USA; the RAAF's purchase of F1-11 from drawing board and the innovative nature of the plane; issues faced by ground crew and air crew; his affection for F1-11 and his involvement with it over 30 years; reflections on living in the USA; the comparative abilities of American and Australian crews; political concerns about this aircraft and its safety; the F-18 Hornet experience, compared to F1-11; migration from one aircraft type to another and the alteration of training systems; the introduction of the 'Beeper' system, adding a much needed safety feature; the safety record of RAAF; Phantoms; simulator missions and their outcomes; further training in USA; how all training was completed and 2 Phantom squadrons were ready to go, within 6 months.
