Original manuscript of the log of H.M.S. "Wolverene", commencing 1st January 1877 and ending 16th May 1879. Entries in the log describe routine matters, shipboard activities and weather conditions. The log is illustrated with pen and pencil drawings of charts, diagrams and sketches of places visited along the east and southeast coasts of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands. The illustrations are signed by Dawson. There is a watercolour drawing of the "Wolverene", which had an historic career as a naval training ship for boys at Sydney between 1882 and 1892. The ship was broken up in 1893. Listed by Lawsons as Lot no. 1403 and sold by auction on 20 October 1993. From the collection of Lt Comdr Geoffrey C. Ingleton.

In his capacity as midshipman, Dawson was responsible for maintaining the log of the "Wolverene" under the command of Commodore A.H. Hoskins. Dawson rose to the rank of Captain RN and had a distinguished career as a hydrographic surveyor.
