Palfreyman, publishing director, Random House Australia recalls her childhood in Cooma, N.S.W.; her father's work on the Snowy Mountains Scheme; her mother, of Serbian nationality, a teacher and nursing sister in Yugoslavia; her grandmother who lived with them and with whom she spoke Serbian; her private school education at SCEGGS (Moss Vale, N.S.W.) then onto Frensham (Mittagong, N.S.W.); studying Arts at Sydney University; her first job in 1985 as a sales representative for Pan MacMillan (Publishers). She speaks about her first editorial job being a concurrent part-time job (1986) on children's books & commercial fiction; how she learnt editing by editing a manuscript and from writers' responses; her seven and a half year career at Pan Macmillan, where she became Acquistions Editor, then Publisher; aspects of work in the publishing business, such as networking & attending book launches.
Palfreyamn speaks about her career move from Pan MacMillan to Random House (Publishers) in the early 1990s; the role of younger women in publishing; as publishing director still having her own writers list; publishers' marketing and publicity policy and budgets; her interests in literary fiction; having few role models from earlier generations; risks in publishing; her roles as publishing director & current issues in the publishing industry.
