- Summary:
-
Paul Quigg who has been close to the HIV epidemic from the start to this day, talks about his upbringing in country Victoria and moving to Melbourne at the end of the 1970s; how his brother was one of the first people in Victoria to be diagnosed with the virus; how his brother was part owner in Melbourne's first gay sauna and the people involved in this project being among the first to be diagnosed HIV positive; the experience of this group who allowed their status to become public; the prejudice and discrimination from some sectors of the gay community; how others stepped up to the challenge and were amazingly supportive; his brother becoming very ill and looking after him until his death; friends getting sick and dying; discusses in some detail the 'Grim Reaper' era; the medications at that time; HIV educators; the new generation of young gay men.
On the second meeting, Quigg focuses mostly on his own experience living with HIV; the medication and the ups and downs that have been associated with this; going off medication and the new set of challenges that followed; many of the core problems faced by those who had expected to die from AIDS and were then given their lives back through new forms of medication; the poverty and loss of career in the intervening decade being difficult to overcome; the psychological problems when death seems an inevitability; facing life with a new optimism having adjusted to his experience of HIV thus far.
