Biography/History

James Northfield is one of Australia's most famous poster artists. Northfield was born in Geelong and after training at the Geelong Technical School he served an apprenticeship with the Melbourne printing firm of F.W. Niven as a lithographic artist. In the early 1930s he set up his own studio in Melbourne. In the 1950s, he won the prize for a cover design for the prospectus of the Art Training Institute, of which he was chief director of studies. Northfield took up painting in oils after the second World War and a number of his loosely impressionistic paintings were reproduced on Australian National Travel Association posters. Biscuit manufacturers, established Port Melbourne 1858 by Thomas Swallow. He was joined by J.H. Ariell in 1863, who was succeeded by F.T. Derham (later M.L.A. and P.M.G.) in 1877. The Derham family have supplied the Managing Director since that date.

Notes

A back view of a little girl in a shop peeping over the counter and pointing to a packet of Swallow & Ariell's Uneeda Biscuit. The oversized basket looped over her right arm has caught the right side of her red dress partially exposing her underpants and suspendered stockings. The man leaning on a counter is looking toward the direction of the packet. Behind him on a shelf are eleven packets of various Swallow & Ariell's products. To the girl's right sits a large cat. Behind it are another five products by Swallow & Ariell. Above them on the counter stands a large glass jar of biscuits labelled "Swallow & Ariell's Best Assorted".
