Lawyer and parliamentarian. Jocelyn Margaret Newman was born in Melbourne in 1937. A member of the Liberal Party of Australia, Newman served as a Senator for Tasmania in the Senate of the Australian Parliament from 1986 until 2002, when she resigned. Her portfolios included Minister of Social Security from 1996 to 1998, and Minister for Family and Community Services from 1998 to 2001. Newman held the portfolio of Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women for two separate periods, in 1996-1997 and from 1998 to 2001.
