Lawyer and parliamentarian. Jocelyn Margaret Newman was born in Melbourne in 1937. A member of the Liberal Party of Australia, Newman served as a Senator for Tasmania in the Senate of the Australian Parliament from 1986 until 2002, when she resigned. Her portfolios included Minister of Social Security from 1996 to 1998, and Minister for Family and Community Services from 1998 to 2001. Newman held the portfolio of Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women for two separate periods, in 1996-1997 and from 1998 to 2001.
Soldier and politician. Kevin Eugene Newman was born in Sydney in 1933 and attended Scots College. He graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, served in Malaya and Vietnam, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1975 Newman entered federal politics when he was elected as the Liberal Party of Australia member of the House of Representatives for the division of Bass, Tasmania. He served as a minister in several portfolios between 1975 and 1983, through the period of the Fraser government, before retiring in 1984. In retirement Newman contributed to public life in relation to heritage matters and in the promotion of community health. In 1994 Newman was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to the community, particularly through the provision of health care services and the preservation of cultural heritage, and to the Australian Parliament. He was married to former Senator Jocelyn Newman. Newman died in 1999.
