Summary

Dr David Bradford speaks about being one of the first general practitioners in Melbourne to deal directly with patients diagnosed with HIV; his time as Director of the Victorian Government's Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinic in Lonsdale Street; his involvement in patient care expanding when he went into private practice in Carlton in 1986; Dr Darren Russell; the following years when many patients developed full-blown AIDS and started to die; the issue of euthanasia coming to a head; the time commitment and emotional pressures working in the AIDS area as an inner-city GP; relocating to Cairns to take up a newly created position at Cairns Hospital as Director of Sexual Health, bringing his expertise in sexual health including HIV to this region; his new patients, both Anglo-European and Aboriginal presenting some new and very different challenges.

Bradford discusses in some detail the HIV epidemic amidst the context of other sexual diseases and community health problems in North Queensland, especially those facing Aboriginals; his recent retirement from full-time work; his book on sexual health (co-written with Dr Darren Russell) published in July 2005.
