Summary

Ted Brandsen, artistic director and choreographer speaks about his reasons for coming to Australia to direct the West Australian Ballet; the challenge presented to him; meeting Kira Bousloff and understanding the history of ballet in Australia; the remoteness of Perth, W.A.; his first impressions of Australia; planning his early repertoire; Chrissie Parrott's "Coppelia"; his aspirations for repertoire development; his impressions of the Perth audience for ballet; the image he wanted to create for the company; his interest in Australian choreographers including Adrian Burnett, Gideon Obarzanek, Natalie Weir and Stephen Baynes; his aspirations for the development of company identity; the size of Western Australia and the nature of Perth; the difficulties of touring for the West Australian Ballet including funding problems; comparisons with Frankfurt and Wuppertal; financial issues and survival of the company; his reasons for leaving Perth.

Biography/History Ted Brandsen is artistic director of the Dutch National Ballet, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He was formerly director of West Australian Ballet, Perth, W.A..
