Sir Nicholas Fancourt Parkinson, a diplomat, was born in England on Dec. 5, 1925 and emigrated with his family to Australia as a child. Following service with the RAAF overseas particularly in Malaysia, he returned in tertiary studies at the University of Sydney and graduated with honours in history in 1950. He then joined the Dept. of External Affairs in 1951. He held the position of High Commissioner to Singapore, 1970-74 and Ambassador to the United States, 1976-77 and 1979-82. He was also appointed Secretary of the Dept. of Foreign Affairs in 1977-78 resigning due a medical condition affecting his eyes. He was knighted in 1980 and retired in 1982.
