Dave Fogarty, born in Cloncurry, Qld., talks about his father's work as a buffalo shooter and station manager; his childhood, a severe leg injury at the age of 9; mustering brumbies on Elsey Station with his father; ringing in a stock camp on Eurie Station (from age 7), his pay; the Duracks, Argyle Station; Hodgson Downs; droving with George Hunt off Victoria River Downs to Wyndham, NT; living in Katherine, NT.; the challenges of running a pack horse mail run (from age 15), the wet season, mules, river crossings, dealing with crocodiles, the contents of pack horse mail, a return trip every six weeks, pay, sub-contracting; ringing and breaking-in horses during dry season; tax rates; breaking-in horses on Limbunyah Station, weekly quota; horse breaking method; his Indigenous off-sider; horse whisperers; Jack Sullivan; the different stock control methods in the north and the south due to terrain; taking up Bradshaw Station, grazing license, sourcing cattle, sale prices and transport; cattle thieves; walking 1,200 cattle from Bradshaw to Mulga Park (taking 7 months), difficult terrain, pack donkeys; bores; his partnership with brother Ted on Lucy Creek and its later sale; sourcing water for shorthorn cattle herd; semi-retirement, his interest in breeding and training race horses; improving Mulga Park, bores, fences, feed on the station and surrounds; the sale of Mulga Park; starting supermarket on the station selling to the Indigenous population.
