Edgar Metcalfe AM. commences the interview with details of place of birth, his parents, adoptive parents and other family. He then discusses his schooling and early theatrical career; the influences which drew him towards theatre as a profession; the circumstances in which his parents died; his early theatrical career in repertory in England; his first directing assignments; Norman Marshall; the circumstances which brought him to Perth, W.A. at the age of 29; Robert Helpmann; his early television experience in England and later involvement in television in Australia; his expectations for the job as director of the National Theatre of Western Australia; the company as it was when he arrived in Perth; his goals for the National Theatre of Western Australia at that time; the Century Mobile Theatre with which he worked after returning to England following 4 ư years in Australia; receiving an invitation in the late 1960's to return to Australia to work as an Associate Director with the Melbourne Theatre Company; John Sumner; working with George Ogilvie and Kristian Fredrickson; receiving an invitation to return to Perth as the Director; his reasons for accepting this invitation.
Metcalfe talks about his production of "Cabaret" which was the first production of this musical in Australia; satisfaction with that first Perth season following his return; recollections of the work he undertook on his return to England; the importance of casting; Hazel Vincent Wallace; being offered an opportunity to appear in a National Theatre production of an all-male version of "The Importance of Being Earnest", and at the same time receiving an offer to assist Laurence Olivier on a production of "Edens End"; his reason for accepting directorship of The Hole In The Wall Theatre and the repertoire performed there; his interest in playwriting; his reasons for returning to The National Theatre Company at the Perth Playhouse; the circumstances leading to the demise of the National Theatre; the concept of The Hyatt Dinner Theatre at The Chevron and some of the productions; his interest and involvement in pantomime; his novels; his interest in musicals; his approach to preparing a production; his involvement in radio; his interest in Shakespeare, both as an actor and a director; his work as a teacher; his future plans and proudest achievements.
