- Inscription on separate sheet found at the back of painting: "In Sir Joshua's list of sitters for year 1781 - Dec'r appears the name 'Dean of Raphoe (King)': Jan'y 1771, the name also of 'Mr. King' along with those of W.W? Wynne, Lady Melbourne, Lady Clarendon?, Master Lambe, & others. In May 1757 a Mr. King appears again? as a sitter. Cricklewood?, London N.W., Oct. 1878".
