A diary kept by Robert Herbertson, one of the survivors of an expedition to New Guinea. The expedition left Melbourne 29th July 1878 for New Guinea with the purpose of prospecting for gold and other minerals. After unsuccessfully attempting some exploration in New Guinea, the members of the expedition were forced to abandon their vessel. They were picked up by a ship en route to Yokohama. The surviving members arrived back in Melbourne 29th March 1879.
