Biography/History

Dr. Howells was born in England and came to Australia when he was appointed to Toowoomba Hospital in Queensland in charge of chest and tuberculosis services. In 1966 he joined the Commonwealth Dept. of Health to direct the national tuberculosis campaign. He served as Director-General of Health 1973-1983. He worked closely with the National Health and Medical Research Council and represented Australia at World Health Organization conferences. He was made Companion of the Bath in 1979.
