Human Veins Dance Theater was founded in 1980 by Don Asker in Canberra. The organisation then established an international reputation as the Meryl Tankard Company from 1989, when Tankard took over the role of artistic director of the Canberra based Human Veins Dance Theatre. Tankard changed the name to Meryl Tankard Company, and left Canberra in late 1992. In 1993 Tankard became artistic director of the Australian Dance Theatre in South Australia, and renamed the company Meryl Tankard Australian Dance Theatre.
