- Map of Macao and the island of Typa [i.e. Taipa] in southeastern China. Typa as one of the offshore islands adjacent to the fortified city of Macau provided safe anchorage for repair of both the Resolution and the Discovery from December 1779 until they left for England in February 1780. While in Macao, the deceased Cook's lieutenants King and Gore sold for over $10,000 the ragged remnants of sea-otter pelts gathered from Alaskan natives in Nootka Sound. This was to precipitate in the next few years a lucrative international fur trade for the Americans and the English centred mainly along the northwest American coast. Originally engraved by W. H[arrison] based on a missing survey by Capt Bligh on the last leg of James Cook's third voyage of the Pacific. Decorative features include a drawing at the top of the sheet of a disordered pile of nautical junk including a British flag, spears, axe and oars, a barrel, a basket & a drum and second drawing at the bottom of the sheet of a man's head draped in seaweed. Relief is shown by hachures and depth by soundings.
