|aThe witchetty grub (also spelt witchety grub) is the large, typically 7 cm., wood-eating larva of various Australian moths, particularly the Cossid Moth Endoxyla leucomochla (aka Xyleutes leucomochla). Edible either raw or barbecued, it is sought out as a high protein food by Australian Aborigines. The common name derives from its habitat: the roots of the Witchety (Acacia) bush. The grubs feature in many Aboriginal paintings. |
