Union official and politician. Brian Richard William Harradine was born in Quorn, South Australia in 1935. In 1959 he moved to Tasmania where he served as Secretary-General of the Tasmanian Trades and Labor Council, 1964-1976, and thus becoming a member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions' Executive. Harradine was expelled from the Australian Labor Party in 1975 and went on to be elected as an independent senator for Tasmania, 1975-2005. In Parliament he achieved benefits for Tasmania and participated in many committees covering such diverse subjects as industrial relations, electoral matters, human embryo experimentation and video materials. At times, and due to the party composition of the Senate, Harradine held a deciding vote on significant issues.
