Biography/History

Of the Rirratjingu people from Yirrkala on Gove Peninsula, Wandjuk Marikawas a leading indigenous elder and spiritual leader, artist, musician, and land rights advocate, who did much to forge an understanding between European and Aboriginal cultures. He was inaugural Chairman of the Aboriginal Arts Board, being appointed in 1974, and he was also influential in obtaining copyright protection for Aboriginal artists. He was awarded the OBE. He died in 1987.
