In this interview Joan Domicelj talks about her childhood in Sydney; her family background; parents' professional life as economists; memories of wartime; her parents' work at the Commonwealth Bank, in rationing and in post-war reconstruction; study at North Sydney Girls' High School; study in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sydney; receiving a cadetship in architecture from the Commonwealth Department of Works (first woman to do so); life as an urban design student at the University of Edinburgh where she met Serge Domicelj, her eventual husband; Serge Domicelj's South American background and European family history; wedding in Sydney; thoughts on the Sydney Opera House; archaeological expedition to the Andes; birth of children and mixing work and family life; work in Canberra for the National Capital Development Commission; move to Chile in 1972 with her husband's appointment to the UN Economic Committee for Latin America; life under the Allende government and life under the military dictatorship after the 1973 coup.
Domicelj speaks about working for the UN High Commission for Refugees in Chile; leaving Chile and moving to Sydney where her husband became Professor of Planning at the University of Sydney; her father's appointment as Governor of the Reserve Bank and his attitude to the Loans Affair; working at the National Trust from 1975-78, marking her foray into heritage planning and management; appointment as Senior Specialist in the NSW Heritage Office in 1978; appointment in 1981 to the NSW Land and Environment Court as a Conciliation and Technical Assessor; her appointment as a Commissioner on the Australian Heritage Commission in 1982; the death of her parents in 1986; her resignation in 1988 from the Court; the establishment of an independent practice as heritage advisor and mediator in land-heritage disputes involving Aboriginal communities; vice-presidency of the International Committee on Monuments and Sites; preparing the Sydney Opera House World Heritage nomination in 1995 (never presented to UNESCO); preparation of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage nomination in 1998 (ratified by UNESCO in 2000); the death of Serge Domicelj in 2003.
