English-born actor who started his stage career on the Solferino goldfields of N.S.W., playing in Shakespeare and comedies until the exhaustion of the goldfields, then worked as a journalist in Melbourne. He returned to England in 1875 and by 1878 was in Henry Irving's famed Lyceum Company in London. In 1880 he visited the United States and quickly became America's leading matinee idol. In 1888 he formed a partnership with Cora Urquhart Potter and they toured the world. They visited Australia twice with great success. Performances included Romeo and Juliet, and, in 1890, Sardou's La Tosca, and Dumas's Camille--Information from vendor and reference sources.
