MS 9941 comprises five albums of newspaper cuttings, photographs, invitations and letters concerning visits to the Maldive Islands in 1948, Ceylon in 1950, Ceylon and London in 1951, and to Ireland for the coronation celebrations in 1953. The collection also includes correspondence of Sir Walter and Lady Hankinson with Sir Percivale Liesching of the Commonwealth Relations Office and Pauline Watson (2 boxes, 1 fol. box).

| Biography/History |
British official and diplomat. Walter Crossfield Hankinson entered the Colonial Office in 1920 and transferred to the Dominions Office in 1925. He was appointed acting Representative in Australia of H.M. Government in 1931-1932 and 1935-1936. He was Deputy and acting High Commissioner in Australia from 1943-1947, High Commissioner in Ceylon, 1948-1951, and Ambassador to Ireland from 1951-1955. Lady Sheila Hankinson was the daughter of the Australian historian, Dr Frederick Watson of Sydney.
