Donald Ritchie, O.A.M. born in 1926, speaks about early life and family; his education; his war service in the Navy and discharge from HMAS Rushcutter (1946); life after discharge; arriving in England (1948), working as a salesman; returning to Australia with new business, until government import restrictions put him out of business; joining Legal and General (L&G) Insurance (1956); 2 years selling life insurance in Sydney; at this time being married to Moya, with 2 daughters; moving to Perth, opening and developing W.A. branch of L&G; becoming State Manager in Perth, W.A., then State Manager in N.S.W.; retiring at 64 and staying on as a consultant; his priorities when he retired; travelling in Australia and overseas with his wife; their home, opposite Gap Park, Watsons Bay, Sydney, where they have lived since 1963; when he began helping potential suicides and what he did; there being only one rescue team in Sydney at that time; Ray Tyson.
Ritchie discusses how he identifies a would be suicide; receiving an award; the number of people he has saved since 1965; people telling him their stories; people who have been saved and also those who have taken their lives; what he says to potential suicides and reasons they give for wanting to die; people leaving something behind, note, bag, shoes, car; discusses a painting left for him out of gratitude by an unknown person; how young people are often suicidal after exam results; there being no police station in Vaucluse; speaks about a local policeman he helped; his religious affiliations; counseling people by talking about their families; the 160 people that have been saved.
