The papers relate to subjects as diverse as whaling and sealing at the Chatham Islands and the Canberra and District Historical Society (178 boxes, 2 cartons, 2 fol. boxes, 2 volumes, 1 fol. volume, 1 fol. packet, 1 poster roll, 1 card index box).
The Acc12.109 instalment comprises two binders and one folder of Cumpston's typescript research notes relating to sealing (2 v.).
- Biography/History:

Geographer, diplomat, historian, and publisher. John Stanley Cumpston was born at Perth, Western Australia in 1909. He attended the University of Melbourne and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. During the Second World War he assisted in the creation and publication of the first reliable map of Antarctica for which he was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London. Following the war Cumpston resumed his career with the Commonwealth Public Service and served on diplomatic postings. He was departmental historian from 1960 until his retirement in 1969.
