Sarah Dingwell talks about her early life and her education; her decision to become a librarian; beginning work at Ryde library (1946); her later studies in librarianship; the early years of the Ryde Public Library; how libraries were run in the 1940s; her move to the City of Sydney Library (July 1949); becoming Assistant Children's Librarian; her role as City of Sydney Library's Children's Librarian (1951-66); her role as president of the Children's Libraries section of the Australian Library Association (1960-65) and as Vice President of the Children's Book Council (1964-65); her responsibilities as Deputy City Librarian from 1964; being the first woman City Librarian (1970-89); the changes and new policies she introduced; her submission to the Horton report (1975); initiating a current awareness bulletin, LOGOS, distributed to all public libraries in NSW; mobile libraries; the introduction of computers into the City of Sydney Library (1974); the impact of the amalgamation of the City of Sydney Council with the South Sydney Council on her library; her relations with the City of Sydney Council during her period as City Librarian.
Dingwell discusses the relocation of the library to Pitt St. (1981); the impact of the relocation and demographic changes to the library's client base in the 1980s; representing the NSW Regional Committee on the Australian Advisory Committee on Bibliographical Services (1970-89); the work of the Australian Library Promotion Council (1981-83); Dulcie Stretton; the achievements of the National Book Council when she was the Chair of the NSW Division (1978-80); her work as President of the Society of Women Writers (1984-86); her friendship with Dymphna Cusack, Betty Roland, and other women writers; her work on the Public Lending Right Committee (PLR) (1974-81); the authors she dealt with as a librarian; the effects of computerisation on libraries; her contribution to the Program Committee of the Australia Broadcasting Commission (1981-83); her reasons for retiring (1989); joining Toastmasters and PEN International the Royal Australian Historical Society (vice president 1990-92); her membership of other organisations; how she looks back on her working life and her relationship with the City of Sydney Library and Sydney itself.
