John Dent, a doctor, speaks of his parent's background, his schooling and early interest in science and chemistry that eventually lead to studying medicine at University of Sydney, how he interned at Western Sydney Hospital training in infectious diseases, moving to the bush at Forbes in 1951 and went into practice with Dr. Delohery, how he specialised as an anaesthetist, medical services in Forbes at that time and the attitude of patients to the doctors, his reasons for wanting to practice in the bush, lack of medical benefits for patients and the doctors worked voluntarily at the hospital without chasing payments owed, comparing the country practice to a busy 24-hour city practice, caring relationship between the general practitioner and his patients, lack of government subsidisation for the hospital, home visits vs. the surgery, the ambulance service, the cost of running the surgery, comparing medical insurance then and now, how hours worked and number of patients have been static over the years, why it is difficult to get doctors to undertake a country practice, increase in overseas doctors in country practices, his view of the Asian doctors, the main changes in medical services over the years, the effect of his practice on his family life, how doctors cope with stress, the change in attitude towards mental illness, is country practice worth it?
