The papers consist of general and family correspondence, notebooks, manuscripts and typescripts of Fairbairn's writings, journals, family photographs, ephemera and a large collection of newspaper clippings. They mostly relate to Fairbairn's writings, particularly those relating to Southeast Asian politics, the Vietnam War and guerrilla warfare.

| Biography/History |
Fairbairn was a Reader in History at the Australian National University, Canberra, a commentator on Southeast Asian politics and an expert on the theory of guerrilla warfare. Fairbairn was the son of James Valentine Fairbairn, Minister for Air 1939-40.
