Dr Margaret Chattaway was born in England. In 1923 she obtained her botany degree at Oxford and subsequently BSc, MA and DPhil degrees. She worked in the Imperial Forestry Institute throughout the 1930, publishing many papers independently or in collaboration with Dr Laurence chalk. She arrived in Australia in 1946 to work at CSIRO (mainly in identifying timber). She was one of the few botanists with qualifications for this work. She worked in Italy, America, England and Australia. Dr Chattaway was an active member of the Soroptimist International of South West Pacific. Dr Hewson and Dr Chattaway worked together at CSIRO, Division of Forest Products from 1956 and this collection was created as a tribute to her friend and mentor.
