Phyllis Matthews talks about her earliest recollection of her Uncle Ted singing a song for her at the front gate of the family home before he headed off to the War; the family home and neighbourhood; siblings and their annoying habits; Uncle Ted returning from WW1; her mother's contraction of the pneumonic influenza (1919); her last memory of her mother; her father's return from the war and his being unaware of mother's death; her obsessive attachment to her father; relocation to the countryside and life on the farm; grandfather as a bullock driver; the new tradition of bullock drivers; her father getting out of the 'family business'; her relationship with step-mother; working at father's hotel; meeting her husband; their business ventures in Brisbane; move to PNG and working as a radio (tele) operator.
