Summary

Includes Dame Nellie Melba's personal collection of 59 music scores, hard bound as a set with leather spine and gold leaf. Most are vocal scores for operas or oratorios, some with working notes, translations and other annotations. Some are signed by Melba, others have signed handwritten notes from composers, including Edgar Tinel, Raoul Pugno, Albert Cahen, Luigi Mancinelli, Ruggiero Leoncavallo, Camille Saint-Saëns and Frédéric, baron d'Erlanger. 5 v. consist of instrumental music for piano or violin and piano. The collection also includes an autograph manuscript of cadenzas written for Melba by celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim, and Melba's silk fan with 25 signatures by famous artists that were associated with her written on the ribs.

Biography/History The Melba Conservatorium of Music was established in 1901, and initially called The Conservatorium of Music, Melbourne. Dame Nellie Melba associated herself closely with the Conservatorium, teaching there from 1915 until her death in 1931. She prolonged her link with the Conservatorium after her death through the provision of a generous bequest, and in 1956 the institution was renamed the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music.
