Summary

Valerie Lisner speaks about how she became involved in dance; her first ballet classes; her marriage to Charles Lisner (1957); the formation of the Lisner Company; the birth of her son; the Lisner Ballet company, tour of Queensland (1961); the establishment of the Academy Theatre; Charles Lisner's innovative choreography; a fire at the Academy Theatre; the premises used by the Queensland Ballet School and Company once they became separate entities; gaining government subsidy for the Queensland Ballet; his personality and the atmosphere in his studio; moving into the house they called 'McCackie Mansions'; 'ballet politics' in Brisbane when he set up his studio; his choice of Brisbane as a location; his ongoing relations with the Brisbane ballet world; his radio broadcasts; his friendships with other Brisbane artists; his choreography style and the influence of Massine on his work; the background to Charles Lisner's teaching ability; the integration of dancers not trained by him into the company; his musical skills; his decision to retire; Harry Haythorne; his writing; his illness and death.

Biography/History Charles Lisner (1928- 1988) was the founder and first artistic director of the Queensland Ballet. Born in Paris, France, Lisner emigrated to Australia with his parents in 1937. He trained with Edouard Borovansky and danced with his ballet company before going to London to continue dance studies with the Sadler's Wells Ballet School. He later joined the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden. In 1953 Lisner returned to Queensland to open the Lisner Ballet Academy, and in 1960, the Lisner Ballet Company. The company was re-named Queensland Ballet in 1962.
