Summary

MS 9459 comprises papers assembled by Patricia Clare documenting her own writing which included short stories, articles, reviews, plays, poems and a book The struggle for the Great Barrier Reef. Early papers reflect the relationship between Clare's aunt, Violet Canty, and Bland Holt. There are also early documents of Clare's mother, Claire Parkes. There are two photos of Mary Gilmore and a copy of one of her books inscribed to Patricia Canty. There is an "Occasional book" which contains poetry, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia of her husband, Harry Scholer. The collection includes correspondence pertaining to Clare's publications and many letters written defending the welfare of animals. Correspondents include E.G. Whitlam, R.J. Hawke, J. Fahey and N.F. Greiner. Restricted material includes Clare's typescript diary and notes, February 1996-December 1997 (5 boxes, 1 fol. box).

Biography/History

Playwright and journalist. Patricia Clare was a professional journalist and author of short stories which appeared in various publications. She also wrote dramatisations for radio broadcasts. In 1971 Clare published The struggle for the Great Barrier Reef.
